Related Events Begin:
This week marks the beginning of the Bowling Green International Festival's related events. Upcoming events focus on students.
September 14 is the deadline for area students to submit a mask for the student Mask Making Contest. A new spin on our annual poster contest, the mask making contest is in support of our 2006 theme "Year of the Mask". Amy Milliken once again serves as the coordinator of this event open to grades K-12 as well as college students. All entries will be exhibited in the Warren County Courthouse in time for our Gallery Walk September 22 and will remain in place until after the festival September 30.
Many art and recreation educators have embraced the contest and incorporated it into their cirriculum. Rivendell for example is using the mask making as a theraputic excercise. Youth at the facility have found the mask making an inspiring project and have created several very impressive works of art. One such piece remembers 9/11, honoring the fallen firemen. The mask is decorated with scenes of the tradgedy and mounted in a fireman's helmet.
Art teachers such as Kim Soule and Teresa Christmas have also utilized the contest for their student's studies at Cumberland Trace Elementary. According to Ms. Christmas, "As an artist who teaches, I have experienced first hand how excited children are about making masks. Kindergartners scream when they put on the masks they have made themselves! I have 360 students and I am so amazed at how every single mask they have made is so different. It has been a great hands on experience as children learn about the culture that their mask represents."
On September 15, the Bowling Green International Festival invites students and adults to Greenwood Skate Center for Roll Around The World a skating mixer and fun-raiser. Two sessions will be held, one from 6pm-9pm and the other from 9pm-midnight. At 8pm a free Kung Fu demonstration and lesson will be presented by East/West Kung Fu. At 9:15pm a free Bellydancing demonstration and lesson will be presented by the Lotus Dancers. Both session feature pinata bursts with beautiful handmade pinatas by Chiseled Features studio sculptor Ronnie Jaggers. Proceeds benefit the Bowling Green International Festival. A discount is available for companies or organizations wishing to purchase a block of tickets in advance. Call 843-3394 for tickets. Tickets are also available at the door.

| Performance Schedule Press Release:
The Bowling Green International Festival is proud to present a diverse 2006 performance schedule. The festival will be held September 30, 2006 from 9am-7pm on Fountain Square. Performances will feature dancers representing Japan, China, Ireland, Bosnia, Israel, Vietnam, New Zealand, Korea and Taiwan. Musical performances will also showcase artists from these countries and more. The origins of bluegrass will be explored through the traditions of Ireland by the Molly Maguires. Modern bluegrass is embraced by Australian Artist Matt Zarb who has appeared with such notables as Willie Nelson, Littlefeat and Goose Creek Symphony playing his brand of "Aussie bush-grass".
Guy Mendilow, voted Boston's Best World Act 2005, will appear to perform his awarding winning overtone singing. The technique allows an artist to sing two or more notes simultaneously with their throat. Mendilow uses sixteen traditional instruments such as the berimbau to play original compositions influenced by the places he's called home including Israel, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil. Trabuko will also take the stage with their brand of latin variety and salsa. Lagniappe, meaning "a little something extra" will feature cajun and zydecco tunes.
Several other groups both local and regional will take the stage or perform in the park. Def Leprechaun, house band for Mulligan's Irish Pub will play traditional Irish music both on stage and in the Ireland booth, the heart of Celtic Nation.
The featured culture this year is Celtic and the Celtic Nation area will be home to several country displays as well as demonstrations such as kilt folding and sword fighting. The Ireland booth will feature a Ceili or Irish jam party with various performances including an opportunity for guests to sing their favorite Irish tune during open mic.
All performances are now listed on our website at http://BGInternationalFest.com with links to more information about each artist. MP3's are also available on many of the groups sites.
